Descript 3.7 is here, and that means exciting new features and improvements to your workflow, including detecting and removing silence in one step, batch export, and easy changes between subscription plans. For a quick look at how these functions work, watch the video below. Read on for the full story.

Remove silences and word gaps

One of our users’ most-requested features has finally arrived. If you’ve got a conversation with long stops and starts between speakers — a Zoom interview, perhaps — or you’d simply like to speed up the “feel” of your podcast, now you can detect, shorten, or replace periods of silence or word gaps in your Descript composition with a single search action.

Batch export

This feature allows for more flexibility when exporting audio from your Descript project. Just like before, you can export an entire composition or a selection from a composition. Now you can also export audio into discrete chunks divided by either line breaks or markers, which will come in handy depending on your composition’s organization. Last but not least, you can additionally export every composition in a given project in one go. Note that this feature will eventually be limited to a higher-priced Descript plan oriented towards professionals, but for the next while, we’re making it available to everyone.

Flatten compositions and replace transcripts

These new features work well in tandem. Flattening a composition will merge all edits in a given composition and remove edit markers in both the timeline and script, allowing you to “start fresh” after many rounds of editing. And Descript’s AI transcription, while very good, is rarely 100% correct. Now you can easily replace Descript’s AI transcript with a manually edited or prepared one. If you regularly work with scripted projects, or collaborate on projects in different stages of editing, these features will come in very handy.

Better control over your Descript subscription

We’ve implemented better control over your Descript subscription within the app itself. If you’re currently on a monthly Descript billing cycle, you can switch to annual — and save a chunk of change in the process — by clicking “Create a new drive” in the project browser and toggling “Billing” on the left side of the pop-up window.

As usual, there’s a number of smaller changes and improvements included under the hood. For a closer look, read our changelog.
