If you’re trying to record better audio for a podcast or voiceover, what’s the first thing that springs to mind? Using a high-quality microphone, most likely. But the space you’re recording in affects the way your recording sounds just as much as the microphone you use to record it. In fact, underestimating the impact of reverberation, or reflected sound, on an audio recording might be the number one mistake anyone recording a podcast or voice over at home will make.

The latest version of Descript is here, and it includes support for Big Sur, performance improvements, and some great new features that will make editing projects and correcting transcripts even easier than before.

We’ve just released an update to Descript with some big new features. We’ve been talking about it internally, and we actually think this might be the best version of Descript ever, but — see what you think. There are ten new things. Check them out:

Few recordings of human speech are recorded “perfectly” — that is to say, inside an acoustically treated studio, with a high-quality microphone, and without external noise or interference. Most are recorded imperfectly, with varying degrees of background noise and unwanted sound. Maybe there’s an air conditioner in the background or line-level fuzz. This is known as room tone, and when it comes to editing audio, dealing with room tone can be challenging and costly, requiring the use of dedicated plugins and software.

It feels like destiny (but it’s mostly just good business): streaming and recorded video coming together to create a real-time content event that combines the immediacy of streaming with the refinement of well-edited video.

It’s true that anybody with a smartphone can make and publish a video. But if you want that video to promote your business, it’s not so simple. Just shooting it and posting it on your social media accounts probably won’t accomplish much. If you’re going to invest the time and money, you probably want more from your video.
